02b2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

This meeting marks some firsts for the Pioneers; the first time members are declared absent (James Holt and William Walker), and the first time that new members are officially admitted. It is decided that, when a current member wishes to nominate a potential new member, they must do so between 9 o’clock and 9.15. Charles Howarth then  recommends James Ryley for membership, and is seconded by James Bamford.

Mysteriously, the next item on the agenda refers to an event that members seem to know has taken place, but which has not been mentioned before in the minutes. Apparently James Daly has examined a counter, which is now to be purchased for 32/6.

Finally, Charles Howarth, James Smithies and Miles Ashworth are selected to research and estimate the amount of capital needed to stock what became the Pioneers’ shop.
