31 October 1844

2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

The pamphlet of rules that the Pioneers decided to have printed at the General Meeting on Sunday are to be sold for 2p each, it is agreed at this meeting. You can read the printed version here: Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society Laws and Objects – 1844.

Also at the General Meeting, a committee was set up to examine Cloth Hall with a view to turning the premises into a store; at this meeting, it is settled that Charles Howarth will offer the owner, Mr. Butterworth, £20 for the building if Mr. Butterworth undertakes to make it tenable.

James Smithies is to ask James Daly for his bill for writing out the laws, and John Dawson is permitted to become a candidate.
