2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

This week’s meeting has an extremely irregular occurrence – the Pioneers start the minutes but do not finish them, and do not record any resolutions. The only notes from this week are “1st That the b”, and the minute taker leaves it there. We can only speculate as to why this is. Perhaps this was written in preparation for a meeting that never took place, or the minute taker simply forgot to carry on writing. The most optimistic theory would be that the minute taker got so caught up in a discussion that the minutes were left by the wayside. The lone “b” which is rather faint perhaps indicates that reason is they ran out of ink!
