2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

This week, the main order of business is new members. William Baker, John Ashden (joiner, Underwood) and Isaac Wade (grocer) become members, having paid their shilling each. Joseph Garside (jobber) and John Pennington, aged 6 (German Street, Wardlesworth Brow) have also paid their shilling each, and are proposed as candidates.

It is also decided that William Taylor takes “the 3/6” – what money this refers to is unknown. There is also a note next to this which states “2/- propossion & 1/0 Deposit”. The proposition money refers to the shillings paid in by candidates, i.e. the money for their being proposed. It is not clear what the “Deposit” money refers to.
