19 September 1844

2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

This week, James Smithies is recorded as absent and James Daly’s fine is revoked (yet there is no record of what he did to incur this). There is a new candidate, John Hill, and the members decide to purchase a counter, “when a suitable one can be found”. There is no further mention of the counter James Daly examined which is referred to in the minutes for September 5th 1844; it was intended then that this counter would be purchased, but clearly it was not found to be appropriate.
