12b2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

The Pioneers have clearly amended their laws so much that there are new ones which need to be legalised; this week, James Daly is charged with sending them to a barrister. The candidates from last week, Joseph Garside and John Pennington are admitted as members this week.

There are four new candidates: James Pendleton (finisher of Calicos, Uncouth Bridges), James Jackson (cabinet maker, Albert Street), William Bamford (weaver, Hudsons) and John Dearden (waste dealer, Middle Lane). Miles Ashworth is to collect their proposition money.

The Pioneers also agree that James Lord’s stock in the funds of “the E P” (Equitable Pioneers, possibly?) be transferred to James Riley: “10/3 by purchases”. No further explanation is given about this.
