The Women’s Guild was established in order to improve the lives of women. Although the co-operative society had always been open to women, many people made it difficult for them to be involved. The Guild gave women a place to discuss issues that concerned them and to develop their confidence in public speaking. Sometimes husbands would disapprove of their wives attending the meetings and so many women would take knitting with them to disguise the purpose of their outing. The women’s guild grew to become an important campaigning organisation and amongst other things, fought for equal pay, the parliamentary vote and maternity benefits.
