The Co-operative Wholesale Society started business in rented offices during 1864. This tile is from the original CWS head office. The wheat sheaf symbol featured here was used by the CWS from its formation. Labor and Wait means that nothing can be achieved without hard work and patience and the wheat sheaf logo symbolises the strength of a team – one ear of wheat cannot stand alone but with others, in a wheat sheaf, it stands strong. The American spelling of Labour (Labor) was adopted early on to show support for the anti-slavery movement in America.
