All working people wore clogs. They were very heavy and noisy. When the Pioneers began to lease the whole of 31 Toad Lane, they opened a library and reading room on the first floor above the original shop. Readers quickly became frustrated with the librarian’s disruptive clogs and as a result bought him a pair of slippers so that he would not disturb their reading.
