6 March 1845

2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

09b1At this week’s Pioneers’ meeting, it is decided that the store rent and “MacKenzies bill” will be paid on March 10. It is not explained any further what this bill is. Mr. Cowcroft and Mr. Tweedale are assigned to look into Joshua Hague’s supply of earthenware, to see if the Pioneers’ wish to purchase it. They are also considering buying his counter, and Mr. Daly is to go and value it.

The abbreviation of Mr. Hague’s name is interesting – it make it initially unclear what his first name is. At the time, Josh could be short for Joshua, Joseph or Josiah. However, the minutes from the April 7 meeting show clearly that his full name is Joshua.
