27 October 1844

2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

04aThese are the minutes from General Meeting that was planned at the last meeting; this is the first time minutes have been recorded from one of these General Meetings. A committee is formed and charged with the task of surveying “Mr. Butterworth’s building”, and deciding what needs to be repaired to make them suitable. It is agreed that the committee – consisting of John Hill, William Mallalieu, James Maden, Charles Howarth, James Daly and Miles Ashworth – shall meet at 12 o’clock on Tuesday 29th October.

The second order of business is the decision that 250 copies of the society’s rules will be printed. James Daly and William Mallalieu are given responsibility for this, and are told to shop around for the best price. That the Pioneers know how to run a successful business is demonstrated in this instruction.
