2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

14b2This week, Pioneers Society president Charles Howarth is absent, so the first order is business to appoint William Taylor as substitute chairman. James Daly is to get the amended laws registered by the magistrate, and James Smithies is assigned to purchase 6 “canasters”. Canaster is a type of smoking tobacco, and we know the Pioneers intended to start stocking tobacco, but the sentence structure implies that this may be a misspelling for “canister”.
