2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.
At the first Pioneers meeting of 1845, the first item on the agenda is the appointment of James Smithies as superior attendant of the store. There are three new members: Abraham Butterworth (weaver, Pin Fold), Charles Shaw (smith, Ann Street) and Richard Lees (cotton spinner, Scott Lane). This week it is Charles Howarth’s turn to loan the law book.
