2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.  To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.

08a1This week, George Ashworth is once again placed in charge of the keys; perhaps he was absent last week, leading them to be given temporarily to James Holt.

Andrew Pilling and Samuel Shore become members, and there are seven candidates proposed: Samuel Tweedale (weaver, Lower Place), John Kershaw (warehouseman, Butterworth), John Cockroft (salt dealer, Butterworth Street), Joseph Greenwood (cotton spinner, Buersil), John Grimshaw (carter, Oldham Road), John Kershaw (collier, Oldham Road), and Henry Kershaw (striker, Oldham Road).
