2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.
The second meeting of the Pioneers was held on Thursday, August 15th 1844 at the Social Institution in Rochdale. Despite this being their second meeting, their minutes show that they considered this to be the official founding date of the society. It was at this meeting that they agreed to purchase a minute book and a register book for recording details of their meetings. We assume this is the minute book and that they copied in the minutes of the first two meetings once it had been purchased. They would also purchase the law book which related to friendly societies, as they had to abide by specific laws concerning such organisations.
