2014 marks the 170th anniversary of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. To celebrate this special anniversary the Pioneers 170 blog will guide you through the Pioneers’ first year.
At this meeting, James Wilkinson (Shoe Maker, High Street), Charles Barnish (Weaver, Spotland), George Healey (Hatter, Sudden Brow) and John Garside (Cabinet Maker, High Street) are designated as Arbitrators of the society. This is the exact list of people (with the exception of John Lord) that were made Arbitrators in the first, unofficial meeting on August 11th; possibly this is just an official renewal of these original appointments? It is also decided that each arbitrator is to be given a copy of the society’s rule pamphlet (see October 27th).
Some names are proffered but it is unrecorded as to what motion is being carried: William Oldham, John Crabtree, Samuel Allat, Isaac Clegg and William Hellawell are to do something (perhaps be admitted? Or are their names being added to the list of arbitrators?).
James Smithies is absent, and a James Butterworth becomes a member; possibly a relation to Mr. Butterwoth, the owner of Cloth Hall? (Or the man himself?) If so, there seems to be no acrimony over the rental of Cloth Hall falling through.
