Co-operative societies would often use alternative methods of education such as magic lantern shows. Members of the public were able to borrow the lantern slides and a set of notes to take home and learn from and we still have some of these slides in the co-operative archives in Manchester City Centre. Later, many co-operative societies were quick to adopt motion film for education and advertisement purposes. Some examples of these films are on show in the museum and copies are also available to buy from the museum shop.
